Legend Of The Chinese Kite

While everyone knows what a kite is, very few people are knowledgeable about the history and origins of the kite. Considering that the legend of Ben Franklin and the kite dates back two hundred and some odd years, it is safe to say that the kite has been around quite a while.

It is believed the kite originated in China several hundred years B.C. Unfortunately, it is very tough to pinpoint the origins of the Chinese kite! There are many colorful origin tales presented as to the origin of the Chinese kite. One such origin states that it was a man’s hat flying off in the wind that started the kite craze. That one sounds a little too idealized to be believable.

What is known, however, and is quite believable is the fact that the Chinese kite was used for a variety of engineering purposes by the Chinese military. More realistic versions of the origin of the Chinese kite show that it had a variety of benefits to early military generals. In some instances, it was used to send a warning or to scare enemies. As simple as the kite was in construction, it remained a highly effective military tool.

As time progressed, and methods of communication improved, the kite started to be used more for hobby purposes. Even more wonderful is the fact that the kite concept traveled to other lands. In this transfer, however, its Chinese origins have become lost which is a shame. But, on the other hand, the Chinese kite now belongs to the world and is enjoyed by millions.

But, in its home country, the Chinese kite is a symbol of cultural history and it is honored by a series of kite flying events held all over the country. So, at least in its homeland, the origins of the kite will not be forgotten.
